Works by Robert Whiting
Having been introduced to trompe l’oeil through the works of Harnett, van Hoogstraten, Peto, and most recently Haberle, I combine both landscape painting and my own particular brand of humor into most of my work.
I am able to intertwine my understanding of figurative work and landscape painting into trompe l’oeil piece. My goal is to create greater illusions, reflecting more current themes while paying homage to the old masters. The objective is not only to deceive the viewer but to also entertain them with subtle humor and sometimes glimpses into my life. I will occasionally incorporate my image in a reflection, include family members names carved into woodwork, or animate one of the subjects in the work. Sometimes it’s so subtle that it’s easily missed.
